Dear Colleague

On behalf of the Pakistan Association of plastic surgeons I would like to welcome you to third International Symposium on the management of Cleft lip and Cleft palate in the historical city of Lahore on March 26-28, 2007.

Lahore is the second largest city in Pakistan and the provincial capital of Punjab. Apart from being one of the cultural and academic centers of the country, Lahore is the Mughal "Show-Window" of Pakistan. The origins of Lahore are shrouded in the mists of antiquity. Lahore has been ruled and plundered by a number of dynasties. However, it touched the zenith of its glory during the rule of the Mughals. The Mughals, who were famous as builders, gave Lahore some of its finest architectural monuments in the form of forts, mosques and gardens. You will have the opportunity to visit a number of such places during this Symposium

The management of Cleft Lip and Palate requires a multidisciplinary approach. From prevention to restoration of form and function remain the main goal in the management of cleft lip and palate. Appropriate genetic counseling depends on a correct diagnosis and on the proper application of the principles of human genetics. The complexities of cleft lip and palate management make it necessary for a variety of professionals to collaborate on the planning and rendering of the services. The collaboration on the part of Plastic surgeons, Genetic Counselor, Pediatricians, Otolaryngologist, Speech Pathologists, Audiologist, and Educational Psychologist, Social worker, General Dentist, Orthodontists, Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeons, Prosthodontists and administrators is required.

The scope of services depends on the mode of finances. Minimum requirement of a team is a Plastic Surgeon, a Dentist, Speech Pathologist , an Anaesthesiologist and an Administrator or Director. Recently many teams have emerged in Pakistan to provide multidisciplinary approach to cleft lip and palate patients. We can assume that in future we will have more professionals in our teams to provide effective means of healthcare in this field.

In this symposium you will have the opportunity to watch and interact in live surgery program regarding cleft lip repair, Palatoplasty, Pharyngioplasty and surgery of cleft lip nose deformities.
